COMMUNITY News:

Now that football season is finished and Super Bowl LIV is history, people might wonder what to do Sunday afternoons.

The Mountain Mixers, in conjunction with the Los Alamos County Parks and Recreation Division, suggest taking square dancing classes. Lessons will be 1:45-3:45 p.m. Sunday through May 3, at the Pueblo Complex gymnasium on Diamond Drive.

The first two classes are free; afterward the cost is $5 per class.

The Mountain Mixers Square Dance Club and the Parks and Recreation Division are sponsoring a set of square dance lessons to meet the public’s needs. For those who think they can’t dance because they consider themselves rhythmically challenged or have “two left feet”, Mountain Mixers assure people they only need to know their left hand from their right hand. Oh, and wear a pair of comfortable shoes.

Square dancing has changed and evolved since the days of barn dances with do-si-dos, “swing your partner” and promenade. Square dancing is a fun, easy to learn social dance with eight people dancing as a group called a “square”.

The group dances to music while moving in formations as directed by a “caller”. The choreography is done by the caller. Dancers only have to know how to perform the individual calls. Two immediate benefits of that is participants get a pleasant form of exercise and their mind is challenged, and in between the dancing participants get a chance to meet a lot of nice people.

The Mountain Mixers encourages anybody curious about this form of social dancing to come and get a taste of modern square dancing. Participants may come with or without a partner. The dress is casual. People who have taken a previous lesson are encouraged to come and help the new class members. Past participants are welcomed to take the class again, too.
