STATE News:
- Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day on the New Mexico True Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail
This Monday, carnivores across the country will unite to recognize one of America’s most iconic and beloved dishes. National Cheeseburger Day falls annually on Sept. 18, and while numerous states lay claim to the invention of the cheeseburger itself only one state can say it’s perfected the burger by adding a single magnificent ingredient: green chile.
The New Mexico Tourism Department is encouraging you to celebrate the occasion on the New Mexico True Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail. This digital roadmap connects more than 60 of the most popular burgers in the state and readers of USA Today named it Best Food Trail in the country in 2015.
The Tourism Department created the trail in 2009, and refreshed it in 2011, by soliciting feedback from New Mexicans on their favorite burgers around the state. Today, the New Mexico True Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail is one of the most sought after culinary guides in the southwest, providing dozens of “safe bets” for those in search of the delicious dish.
In addition to the Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail, the Tourism Department has also created the New Mexico True Breakfast Burrito Byway, New Mexico True Culinary Treasures, and the New Mexico Ale Trail as fun options for residents and out-of-state visitors alike to explore every corner of the state based on what they are craving.

About New Mexico True: The New Mexico Tourism Department created the New Mexico True campaign in response to common misconceptions that New Mexico is a dry, arid, barren desert state with nothing to do. Built upon the idea that a trip to New Mexico is an “adventure that feeds the soul,” the campaign provides a platform for unified brand messaging for more than 50 communities and businesses around the state. In 2015, New Mexico True received two prestigious awards for “Best Digital Campaign” in the country. Since the launch of the campaign in 2012, the economic impact of tourism in New Mexico has grown for six consecutive years.
