Pearl Armijo is retiring Dec. 31 from Metzger’s after working for the family-owned hardware store for 30 years.
“It’s time, I’ve turned 65, my husband is already retired and we want to go camping more and take a long trip,” Armijo told the Los Alamos Daily Post Friday.
Armijo has worked at all three Metzger’s locations including the Los Alamos store at 1607 Central Ave., Metzger’s Tire & Auto at 1399 Diamond Dr., and the White Rock store at 128 N.M. 4 where she has spent more than 20 years. The people she’s worked with and the customers she has met through the years are what Armijo says she has enjoyed most.
“Pearl has been a joy to work with all of the 18 years that I’ve been here,” White Rock Manager Dan Saxton said. “She knows hardware from top to bottom … she’s educated in all fields of plumbing, electrical, you name it.”
Each summer when Metzger’s hires students, Armijo takes them under her wing, he said.
“She has always been very instrumental in making sure they did what they were supposed to … they are like our kids and many keep coming back and now we’re getting the kids of the kids who worked for us … that is what makes Metzger’s like a family and Pearl has always given it that personal feeling,” Saxton said. “I’m going to miss her for sure … she’s a wonderful person.”
Metzger’s has been serving Los Alamos and the surrounding communities since 1947. The stores carry a wide variety of products for residential and commercial projects. The White Rock store carries a top line of major appliances including washers and dryers. Metzger’s customers also have access online to 65,000 home improvement products.
