The Chamber of Commerce is providing an online service to community members who are looking to meet other people and experience a variety of events with others.
The service is built on the popular social network, “Meetup.com” and more than 40 people have signed up so far. The web address for the group is www.meetup.com/Los-Alamos-Yours-to-Discover.
There is a bit of expense involved to set up a Meetup group, so the Chamber is sponsoring the group to provide a way for people to interact around events organized by locals.
“We had heard repeatedly from people who wanted an easier way to meet and socialize with others, and a Meetup group seemed like a good approach to try,” says Chamber Executive Director Kevin Holsapple. “Meetups provide a way for people to feel comfortable participating in group activities even if they don’t already know other people in the group … it’s a welcoming bunch of folks.”
Hiking, music, art, picnicking, food, beer, wine, a road trip, and more have all factored into meetups that have happened since the local group got started.
Any group member is invited to take the lead in planning and facilitating a Meetup event. Events often piggyback onto larger events being held in the community, but not always.
Events are posted on the Meetup webpage and members receive email reminders to RSVP whether or not they plan to attend. Anyone can join at the group webpage for free and post a simple profile.
“It’s a great way to get acquainted with people that I might never have met otherwise,” says Meetup group member Anna Dillane.
Dillane is taking the lead on coordinating the next scheduled Meetup … happy hour at Dixie Girl at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25.
“The Happy Hour will be an every week meetup at Dixie Girl providing that there is a good RSVP,” she said.

Chamber member businesses and groups are also invited to use the page to host and promote a meetup. This can be used as a way to invite the Meetup group members to take part in their events.
