Meet New LAHS Principal 4:30-6 p.m. Today

Los Alamos High School will host a meet and greet 4:30-6 p.m. today with incoming Principal Dr. Debbie Belew-Nyquist for students and parents in the lobby of the high school.

Dr. Belew-Nyquist, who officially begins her duties July 1, will be in Los Alamos through Wednesday. She will meet with staff and students several times during these days and with the Board of Education Tuesday evening. 

Dr. Belew-Nyquist of Silverdale, Wash., was selected for the principal position following an extensive national search. She brings 24 years of educational experience and leadership in schools. Most recently she served as an educational consultant with the International Schools/Children of the Nations, which prepares children of developing countries to become leaders of their nations. She previously served as an assistant principal at Central Kitsap High School in Washington State. One of her many responsibilities was the development of a peer crisis intervention program that received national recognition. She also was tasked with expanding the Advanced Placement, Honors and Distinguished Scholars programs, which received national recognition as well.

Dr. Belew-Nyquist comes to Los Alamos with a reputation for building strong relationships with students, staff, parents and community. In accepting the position, she commented, “I am excited to join Los Alamos Public Schools and look forward to working together to continue the strong tradition of excellence.”

Dr. Belew-Nyquist has two sons, one working for the Peace Corps in Paraguay and one pursuing doctoral studies in California.
