Matt Walker Wins County Spelling Bee

A good crowd was on hand to enjoy the Los Alamos County Spelling Bee Tuesday, Jan. 21 at Chamisa Elementary School.  

The winner was Matt Walker from Pinon Elementary School. He is a sixth grader who enjoys math and P.E.  He also loves to run and play soccer and wants to be a lawyer. Walker will represent Los Alamos at the New Mexico Spelling Bee.  

In second place was Eleanor Henderson from Mountain Elementary School. She is a sixth grader who participates on a swim team and loves to sing. Henderson was Jasmine in the Atomic City Theater production of Aladdin. She also wants to become a lawyer.

In third place was Lidia Appell from Chamisa Elementary. She is a fifth grader. In school, she likes social studies, science, art and drama club. Appell loves running and hopes to be a runner, teacher or an actress one day.  

Los Alamos Police Sgt. Oliver Morris, Youth Advocate Morrie Pongratz and Abe Dispenette of Abe Dispenette State Farm Insurance served as judges for the County Spelling Bee. Debbie Grothus called the words for the contestants.
