Maria Jones of Los Alamos has been awarded a Jean Boswell Foundation Scholarship for exceptional achievement and academic excellence.

This Scholarship is offered by the New Mexico State Chapter of P.E.O. to a New Mexico woman entering her junior or senior year in college or university. Jones is entering her senior year at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, studying speech and hearing sciences and Russian language.

Best known locally as a fiddler and championship dancer with Belisama Irish Dance, she is studying to become a speech pathologist. She is the daughter of Philip and Heather Jones of Los Alamos.

Jones was sponsored for consideration by Los Alamos Chapter BC. The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded Jan. 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is a philanthropic and educational organization interested in bringing to women increased opportunities for higher education. There are approximately 6,000 local chapters in the United States and Canada with nearly 240,000 active members.
