LWVLA News:
The League of Women Voters will have its monthly community event, Lunch with a Leader, at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 in Mesa Public Library.
Three speaksers are featured this month. Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus and School Board member Bill Hargraves will discuss the upcoming LAPS bond election and UNMLA CEO Cindy Rooney will explain their upcoming 1mil bond election.
One of UNMLA’s goals is to implement the Early College and Career Academy. The bond can help pay for this program by allowing operational funds generated from the mil levy to support the program. The proclamation calls for a “property tax levy of $1 per each $1,000 of net taxable value of property.” This translates to an estimated cost of just $33.33 per $100,000 of assessed property value. Research shows that high school students benefit from access to college courses during their high school years.
Benefits include a greater likelihood for students to go to college and completion rates at college in a faster time frame. Dr. Rooney noted that UNM-LA and LAPS have been partnering to offer dual credit and college-level courses for Los Alamos High School students for many years. The number of LAHS students taking UNM-LA classes has grown from 132 students in 2010-2011 to 299 students during the 2015-2016 academic years. During the same time period, the number of LAHS student credit hours has increased from 609 to 1,094.
The LAPS bond would not raise taxes. LAPS announced that it was going to ask residents to vote for $13 million in bond funding to rebuild Barranca Mesa Elementary School and to take care of other infrastructure issues in the district. Steinhaus points out that voters deciding on two questions instead of one is good for the community because it will be a cost savings.
