The League of Women Voters presents their monthly community event, Lunch with a Leader at 11:45 a.m. Sept. 19 in Mesa Library.
Their guest speakers will be Jennifer Sublett and Lynn Bjorkland from the US Forest Service. They will be discussing the Forest Service – its history, management, goals. budget, etc. This information will help the League with their study regarding the transfer of federal public land to NM.
Jennifer is currently a District Volunteer Coordinator in the recreation and trails program with the SF National Forest. She has held this position since 2009. She entered the field of volunteer management and engagement, and as luck would have it, while volunteering with the trails program in the Shawnee National Forest, she became their Assistant Volunteer Coordinator in 2007. Prior to this she was a Program Director for the Girl Scouts and an environmental educator. Her educational background includes an undergraduate degree in Parks and Recreation with an emphasis in Program Management and a Masters’ Degree in Outdoor Education. She is originally from Normal, IL and currently lives in White Rock with her husband, Joel, and cat Moonshadow.
Lynn Bjorklund grew up in Los Alamos and reports that she still glows in the dark. She has an MS in Biology with a minor in Toxicology from NMSU. In the 1980’s, she spent 3 seasons as a volunteer Wilderness Ranger with the Pecos District, one of those was as the first paid Wilderness Ranger. She worked for the BLM in Ely, NV as Reclamation Specialist working to bond and reclaim new and abandoned Nevada heal leach gold mines on public lands for 20 years. But as with many folks, she returned to Los Alamos to work in the Santa Fe National Forest in 2010 as the Recreation Team Leader in the Espanola District. She reports that she has had great fun and adventures on the job ever since!
