Lunch With A Leader: Establishing A Public Bank Aug. 18

The League of Women Voters presents its monthly community event, Lunch with a Leader at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18.

This month’s speakers include: Angela Merkert, Melissa Pickett and Elaine Sullivan who have been working to extend knowledge about the establishment of a public bank.

Merkert worked as a university professor in education; leadership and organizational development in the corporate world; and executive director roles in nonprofit organizations for 15 years.

Pickett is a former banker, organizational development consultant and health and wellness advocate. 

Sullivan came to public banking as a volunteer advocate for social and economic justice, following a career in organizational consulting. 

A Public Bank for New Mexico will support Infrastructure, agricultural, social and economic initiatives contributes to a livable, resilient economy. The taxes and fees deposited in a public bank can then be invested by professional bankers, in partnership with community banks and credit unions, to support local priorities.  “The mission of a public bank is to take back our money from Wall Street and do good things here at home for all our residents.”
