Luján Statement on Failure to Prevent Sequester

U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján

U.S. CONGRESSIONAL News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District released the following statement today after Congress failed to pass legislation to prevent the sequester’s budget cuts that are scheduled to begin tomorrow.

“Today is a disappointing day, when partisanship and ideology stood in the way of compromise and the best interests of the American people. The arbitrary cuts from the sequester will impact education, public safety, health care, and more – leading to job losses and harming an economic recovery. Already the uncertainty surrounding sequestration has led to cuts and job losses at Los Alamos, and the ripple effect will take a toll on New Mexico small businesses and families.

“House and Senate Democrats, along with President Obama, offered plans to avoid the sequester with a balanced approach that included spending cuts while closing tax loopholes. Unfortunately, Tea Party Republicans in Congress were unwilling to compromise on a path forward.

“From the very beginning and every step of the way, I opposed to the failed experiment that is sequestration. This was a manufactured crisis that was never intended to take place, yet with House Republicans putting indiscriminate deficit reduction ahead of job creation, we are now faced with severe budget cuts that will weaken our fragile economy.

“Despite a failure to act today, I will continue to urge my colleagues to come together and act swiftly to minimize the impact of these cuts and the damage they will do to New Mexico and our nation.”
