Luján On Death Of Navajo Code Talker Kee Etsicitty

Navajo Code Talker Kee Etsicitty

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District released the following statement on the recent passing of Kee Etsicitty, a Navajo Code Talker from Chichiltah, N.M.:

“As a young man more than 70 years ago, Kee Etsicitty joined the Marine Corps to help fight the forces of tyranny that were waging war across Europe and in the Pacific. Mr. Etsicitty proudly answered the call when his country needed him, serving in the battles of Guadalcanal, Guam, and Iwo Jima.

“As a member of the Navajo Nation, Mr. Etsicitty joined with his fellow Diné to use their language to form an unbreakable code that helped the Allied forces win the war. An instrumental part of the Navajo culture, the language that helped pass down generations of tradition and history became legendary, as did the brave men known as the Code Talkers.

“As we mourn the loss of Kee Etsicitty, my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends and all of his fellow Code Talkers who have lost another brother in arms. While we are saddened by this loss, we take comfort by reflecting on the enduring legacy of Kee Etsicitty and all the Navajo Code Talkers.”
