Luján Issues Statement on Immigration Reform

U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan

Rep. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., of New Mexico’s Third District released the following statement on President Obama’s speech on immigration reform and the announcement that Speaker John Boehner will not allow the House to act on comprehensive immigration reform this year:

“It is shameful that the Republican House leadership has failed to act on immigration reform and has now confirmed that they have no intention of doing so. Over a year ago, after working on a bipartisan good-faith compromise, Senate Democrats and Republicans were able to come together to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill. It has since languished in the House – alongside a House Democratic proposal modeled on the Senate version – with no action by Speaker Boehner and the Republican leadership. Despite their empty rhetoric, House Republicans have remained the one roadblock to passing much-needed reform that strengthens our economy and our security.

“I agree with the President that Congress must act if we are to finally fix our broken immigration system once and for all. And while it is deeply disappointing that House Republicans are refusing to listen to a broad majority of Americans who support comprehensive immigration reform, I am encouraged that President Obama has pledged to the enact solutions available to him through executive action. I look forward to his Administration’s recommendations to ensure our borders are secure while providing flexibility for those who would be eligible for a pathway to citizenship under current legislative proposals – particularly DREAMers, who want to come out of the shadows and contribute to the only home that many of them have ever known.”
