Luján Addresses National Defense Authorization Act

U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District released the following statement after voting in support of the Fiscal Year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes a number of priorities for New Mexico.
“From the dedicated men and women who serve our country at Cannon Air Force Base, to the cutting edge research taking place at Los Alamos National Labs, I am proud of the leading role New Mexico’s Third District plays in ensuring our national security policy. Though this is not a perfect bill, it authorizes key resources that support priorities for communities across New Mexico. This defense bill includes robust funding for environmental cleanup at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), which is essential to advancing the environmental remediation projects that are critical to the communities surrounding our labs.
“The NDAA includes robust support for nonproliferation efforts which will help address some of the most difficult problems facing our country and the world. In addition, I was proud to work with Senator Martin Heinrich to include language to strengthen laboratory directed research at our national labs. Such research has led to a variety of cutting edge breakthroughs including the ChemCam sensors on NASA’s Mars Rover, quantum encryption, and battlefield MRI. This provision will help ensure the labs are ready to make the new discoveries that will spur innovation and economic development for years to come.
“Finally, this bill strongly supports our men and women in uniform by providing a pay raise to our troops and their families and by modernizing the Uniform Code of Military Justice’s provisions on sexual assault.”
