Luján Addresses Amendments That Attack DREAMers

U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján

CONGRESSIONAL News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján joined members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer at a press conference Wednesday denouncing amendments offered by House Republicans to the Defense Appropriations Act that attack DREAMers by preventing them from serving in the Armed Forces.

Below are his remarks as prepared.

“I want to thank my colleagues with the CHC and Whip Hoyer for their leadership on this issue, particularly Ruben Gallego, a veteran himself and a champion for the men and women who serve our nation.

“Soon on the House floor, we are going to see yet again a clear example of how House Republicans are the Party of Trump when they offer divisive amendments that attack DREAMers. House Republicans want to deny DREAMers the opportunity to join the Armed Forces and serve the country they are proud to call home.

“This is another shameful attempt to prevent DREAMers and immigrants from contributing to our country and being a part of the greatness of our nation.

“The Secretary of Defense has the authority to enlist DREAMers when it is in the national interest, yet House Republicans want to block the Secretary from doing so. Instead of offering strong and smart policies to keep the American people safe, House Republicans are seeking to put their political security ahead of national security with harsh anti-immigrant policies that are straight out of the Trump playbook.

“In the wake of the act of terror and act of hate in Orlando, the American people want solutions to make them safer. They do not want reckless national security policy, and they certainly don’t want Congress to be focused on extreme ideology. That is what these amendments are. Clearly House Republicans are taking their anti-immigrant cues from Donald Trump.”
