The Los Alamos High School wrestling team completed its District 2-5A duals competition Jan. 18 facing Espanola Valley High School and Albuquerque’s Del Norte High School in head-to- head competition at Espanola.
The Hilltopppers defeated Espanola 51-28, but came up just short against the Knights, losing 41-34 in competition that came down to the last match.
Leading the way for the Hilltoppers was 220-pound wrestler Milo Light, who defeated Del Norte’s Michael Chino and Espanola’s Ace Gabrentina. Other Los Alamos wrestlers who were undefeated were Trevor Brown, who defeated Del Norte’s Nathaniel Rubio and won by forfeit against Espanola in the 145-pound class. Sam Harvey defeated Espanola’s Josiah Martinez and won by forfeit against Del Norte at 195 pounds. Dylan Irish, who defeated Espanola’s Alex Najera and also won by forfeit against Del Norte at 160 pounds.
A forfeit happens when one team has a wrestler representing them in that weight class and the other team doesn’t. Forfeits earn six points. Six points are awarded for a win by pinning (fall) your opponent Five points are awarded for a technical fall (15 or more points) Four points are awarded for a major decision (8-14 points) and three points are awarded for a decision (less than eight points).
Against Del Norte, the Knights were leading 38-34 going into the final match at 132 pounds. If Los Alamos’ Neil DeHerrera had been able to pin Del Norte’s James Ortega, the Hilltoppers would have won.
Ortega ended up defeating DeHerrera on points 9-5 to secure Del Norte’s victory.
In their first District 2-5A duals meet, Los Alamos faced Capital High School of Santa Fe and Albuquerque Academy Jan. 11 at Los Alamos. The Hilltoppers defeated Academy 46-30 and lost to Capital 52-21.
Standouts against Capital and Academy included Trevor Brown, who won both of his matches with pins. Milo Light won both of his matches, one by pin and the other by decision. Reyes Mendez won both his matches, one by pin and the other by major decision at 152 pounds. Patrick Irish won both his matches by forfeit at 285 pounds.
The wrestling team traveled to Aztec to compete in the Aztec Tiger Duals. There were 12 teams competing at Aztec. In the first round of Competition, the Hilltoppers competed in Pool 1 against host Aztec High School, Bernalillo High School and Monticello High School from Utah. The Hilltoppers lost to Aztec 52-24, defeated Monticello 42-34 and beat Bernalillo 52-12. They finished second in their Pool.
In the next round of competition, which pitted the second-place finishers from each of the three Pools, the Hilltoppers came in third. Meeting up with Del Norte again, this time the Knights dominated and won 52-18. Bloomfield High School defeated Los Alamos in a close match 37-36.
Standouts at Aztec were Sam Harvey, who was undefeated (5-0) at 195 pounds. Patrick Irish was undefeated (3-0) at 285 pounds. Eighth-grader Devin Atencio at 106 pounds, Dylan Irish at 160 pounds and Milo Light at 220 pounds were all 4-1 at Aztec. Donovan Atencio was 3-2 at 113 pounds.
The Los Alamos wrestling team will be competing at the Robertson Cardinal Classic hosted by Robertson High School Jan. 27 in Las Vegas.
