The Los Alamos Triathlon is celebrating its “ruby” 40th year as the oldest, continuously running triathlon in the United States with a challenging sprint triathlon starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 in Los Alamos.
In addition, the 21st annual Kids Triathlon is 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17 for kids between three and 10 years of age.
In honor of the Triathlon’s 40th anniversary, all triathletes are encouraged to wear red.
The Los Alamos Triathlon course is back on its original route, including a 20K (12.4 mile) rolling bike course that begins in town at an elevation of 7,400 feet and traverses an open course surrounded by forest, from N.M. 501 to N.M. 4, followed by a 400-meter pool swim and ending with a mildly flat 5K run. Bike helmets are required.
Individual race categories include:
- Elite (no age category);
- Athena (women 150 pounds or more); and
- Clydesdale (men 200 lbs. or more).
Team race categories include male; female; and co-ed, divided by age groups.
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third placements in each category.
Entry fees are $50 for Elite, Individual, Clydesdale and Athena triathletes. Two person teams are $90, and three person teams are $120. Entry includes long sleeve shirt, post-race refreshments, Los Alamos coupon book and post race giveaways.
The deadline for early bird registration is 7 p.m., Aug. 12. Late registration will be accepted by 7 p.m., Aug. 14. Late triathlon entries will be assessed a $15 fee, or $5 for kids triathlon. There is NO race day registration.

- Hand delivered registration forms will be accepted at the Walkup Aquatic Center, 2760 Canyon Road.
