Los Alamos Students Shine At State Math Competition

Seven Los Alamos students received awards for their performance Saturday, April 19 at the 51st annual UNM-PNM Statewide Mathematics Contest.
 
The competition, which begins in November with a test held at schools across the state, attracted more than 800 students. Roughly 200 students advanced to the second round, held in early February at UNM.
 
Of these students, 30 winners were selected based on their overall and grade-specific performances. Mountain Elementary student Henry Gans was in a three-way tie for first place in the Fifth Grade division. Linnhtet Htoon from Pinon Elementary school won first place for Sixth Graders. Los Alamos Middle School students Sonja Ebey and Charles Cai placed first and second respectively in the Eighth Grade division. Los Alamos High School sophomores Max Corliss and Anthony Lestone finished first and fifth respectively for their grade. Senior Do Vo was third in his division.
 
Additionally, in the overall competition, Vo finished third and Corliss fourth. Los Alamos Public Schools teachers Bernadette Zimek, Svetlana Martin, Julia Sheppard, Nikol Strother, Stephanie Abney and Phong Nguyen also were recognized for their roles in their pupils’ successes.
 
Additionally, local “Mathcounts” programs for elementary and middle school-aged students were recognized. Each student received math-related books in addition to monetary awards for their accomplishments.
