Los Alamos Students Shine at Chemistry Olympiad

The Central New Mexico Section of the American Chemical Society has announced the names of four outstanding high school chemistry students in the 2013 New Mexico Chemistry Olympiad competition: 

  • Kevin Gao of Los Alamos High School                  
  • Alexander Wang of Los Alamos High School        
  • Aaron Geelon So of Albuquerque Academy          
  • Andrew Chen of Albuquerque Academy                

The students have been nominated to take a national exam that could qualify them to become members of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad team that will compete in the 45th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Moscow, Russia July 15-24. 

The IChO involves a series of theoretical exams, laboratory exercises, and other activities aimed at identifying the best chemistry students from participating nations around the world. 

This is the 29 year of U.S. participation in the IChO. In 2012, the U.S. team won one gold medal and three silver medals at the IChO in Washington, D.C., where 279 students represented 72 countries.

Founded in 1876 and chartered by Congress, the American Chemical Society is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to the advancement of chemistry in the public interest. 

The Central New Mexico Section is one of 188 sections across the nation serving the Society’s 164,000 members.
