Through the generous support of the Santa Fe Opera, Los Alamos High School students were invited to view Dr. Atomic.Thursday, Aug. 2.
This opportunity is part of an ongoing collaboration with Santa Fe Opera Education and the Los Alamos Opera Guild in which LAHS students of AP Literature learn about the power of story through the art form of opera. Their work includes guest lectures, a spring tour of the SFO campus and a culminating viewing of a full production.
This year’s event was particularly impactful as the performance dealt with a fundamental component of Los Alamos history.
Students enjoyed the artistic rendition of a past with which they are quite familiar. But while provocative and compelling in subject matter, there were moments of coincidental humor, too. As last night’s torrential downpour and lightening engulfed the theater, General Groves’ character demanded “What the hell is wrong with the weather?” to which Oppenheimer’s character replied, “The weather can be whimsical.”
