Last week several Los Alamos athletes competed in the 2017 Western Zone Championship Swim Meet in Roseville, Calif. Andy Corliss, Duncan Henderson, Orion Henderson, Carson Hicks, Savannah Kimball, Ming Lo, Konstantine Nelson and Sophia Pieck were eight of the 57 swimmers representing the New Mexico Zone Team. Maribeth Englet-Erickson also was selected as one of the four New Mexico Zone age group coaches, and Linda Corliss and Anna Zhang were selected as team chaperones.
Notable swims included Ming Lo, who placed third in the men’s 12-under 200 m breaststroke and Duncan Henderson, who won the men’s 10-under 100 m backstroke. Two other New Mexicans managed top finishes, including Ally Bernier (14) and Mario Sumali (12), both of Albuquerque. Ally Bernier set new Western Zone records in the 800 m and 400 m freestyle, respectively.
Western Zones Championship is held every summer with approximately 680 swimmers age 14 and under from New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii and Alaska.
