Los Alamos MainStreet News:
Los Alamos ScienceFest returns this year Tuesday, July 6 through Sunday, July 11 for a hybrid event that will feature both virtual and in-person Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) activities.
The annual Los Alamos ScienceFest, now in its 14th year, will highlight the community’s role at the forefront of science and technology research and innovation – from space exploration to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The July event will cover educational topics for the whole family. The goal: make science fun, more accessible and easy-to-understand, and inspire youth to have a passion for exploring STEAM topics – while at the same time revealing some of the focus areas for Los Alamos National Laboratory and other local scientists.
This year it’s ScienceFest+, which means there will be more STEAM topics to discover, experience and learn, through a variety of mediums.
Live science panels and demos take place after 5 p.m. through Saturday of ScienceFest week at Fuller Lodge, and include topics ranging from COVID disease modeling, to composting demonstrations.
Several outdoor movie night screenings will engage the entire family, from Robin Williams’ classic, “Flubber” to the filmed-in-New Mexico “The Astronaut Farmer”.
Virtual activity options also will be available for those not yet comfortable attending in-person.
While Saturday’s typical Discovery Day won’t be happening due to the ongoing pandemic, this year event organizers are piloting a program where local participants can reserve and pick up a free “Discovery Box” to experience hands-on science at home in lieu of the highly interactive, high-touch Discovery Day at Ashley Pond.
Several different boxes will be available, depending on age group, and tailored to preschoolers, kids and teens/adults. Boxes must be reserved in advance on a first-come basis through the Los Alamos ScienceFest website and can be picked up at the beginning of ScienceFest week starting Tuesday, July 6.
Saturday, July 10 will still feature some in-person activities, including an Electric Vehicle Show and limited organizations present for some demonstrations and STEAM education.
