Los Alamos Atomic Tumblers travelled to Galveston Texas during the May 19th weekend to compete in the 2017 Region 3 Xcel Championship meet.
Over 780 gymnasts competed representing 94 teams from, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas. This was the first ever USA Gymnastics sponsored Xcel Regional Championship for Region 3.
There were 433 Gold division, 248 Platinum Division and 30 Diamond Division gymnasts competing, throughout the weekend. There were seventy four to eighty gymnasts in each session. The gold division competed on Friday and Saturday in sessions 1-6.
The platinum division competed Saturday and Sunday in sessions 7-9. The tenth and final session was mixed Diamond and Platinum. Besides the eight gymnasts from Los Alamos, five gymnasts from G Force of Albuquerque’s West side, three from Eagle Ridge of Rio Rancho, and two from Elite Gymnastics of Roswell represented New Mexico.
In session 1, the youngest gold group, Los Alamos was represented by Colette Bibeault and Danielle Trellue from Los Alamos. Colette brought home a silver medal for her uneven bars routine, where she scored a 9.55. Danielle took seventh with a 9.225 on her bar routine. On the vault Colette was seventh and Danielle was ninth. In the all-around, Colette took eleventh place with 36.20, while Danielle took twelfth.
In session 2 Los Alamos was represented by Megan Brown. Megan brought home a bronze medal for her 9.50 on the floor exercise. Megan’s other top ten finish included a 9.425 on bars, for sixth. In the all-around she was fourteenth with 35.075. Anika Lovato was qualified to represent Los Alamos in the third session, however she was unable to compete due to a soccer injury. In session 4, in the seniors gold division, Sara Gardner represented Los Alamos well. Sara had a top ten finish on bars with a 9.175. She was fifteenth in the all-around with 35.525.
Saturday afternoon began the platinum competition with the youngest platinum gymnasts in session 7. Los Alamos’ gymnast Chantel Bibeault competed in this session. Chantel finished fifth on the balance beam with 9.45. She was fifteenth in the all-around with 35.45. Kayli Lincoln qualified for this session also but was unable to attend.
Saturday evening in session 8, Los Alamos fielded two platinum gymnasts. Brianna Fryer brought home silver on the floor exercise scoring 9.675 for second place. Brianna also finished in the top ten with 9.25 for seventh on vault and 8.95 for seventh on bars. She was also seventh in the all-around with 36.275. She had Los Alamos’ highest all around total. Teammate Addie Richie was ninth on floor with 9.325 and fourteenth in the all-around. In the Sunday morning session 9, Hannah Gram competed. Hannah finished in top ten on everything but beam. She was eighth on bars, ninth on floor, and tenth on vault. Her all-around score of 35.85 was eighth.
This finishes the long competitive season for upper division Xcel gymnasts in New Mexico. Los Alamos Atomic Tumblers Platinum team will begin working on advanced skills to compete Diamond next Fall. The Gold team will do some work toward Platinum and work some JO level 5 routines. Silver has been working toward gold and JO level 4 since state.
