Staff Report

At Thursday’s meeting, the Los Alamos School Board voted 4-1 to grant McCarthy Construction an extension to the deadline specified in its contract to complete work at Los Alamos Middle School.

McCarthy Construction cited delays from unforeseen rock chipping to cold temperatures and snow in November and December. The company requested the extension during the Dec. 12 Special School Board Meeting at Los Alamos Middle School and was given until Dec. 23 to get the job done.

School Board Member Kevin Honnell voted against the measure. Honnell said he could support extending the contract through Dec. 19, but the 13-day delay for bad weather requested by McCarthy was too long.

While the School Board discussed construction delay issues, McCarthy construction employees could be seen through the windows of Los Alamos Middle School working away. After a number of delays, work is expected to be completed by Dec. 23, representatives of McCarthy Construction said at Thursday’s Special School Board Meeting. Photo by Bonnie J.
