For two decades Kari Lier has been growing her hair out to have it cut every 2-3 years to donate to be made into wigs for people battling cancer.

Lier was born and raised in Los Alamos. She is a breast cancer survivor.

“I have been donating my hair for 20 years to Locks of Love and this is the first year I am donating it to Wigs for Kids because they don’t charge patients for the wigs,” Lier said.

Wigs for Kids is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 that has been providing wigs and support for children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, burns and other medical issues at no cost to children or their families.

October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Lier said in honor of the occasion she wore her pink mask Monday to get her hair cut at the beauty salon.

Lier explained why her hair is ideal for donating and being made into wigs.

“I’m 61 and I don’t have any gray hair. They don’t want permed hair or colored hair or gray hair,” she said. “If I can donate my hair at age 61 – people of all ages can do it!”
