The Republican Party of Los Alamos County held its Ward Caucuses and Biennial County Convention Saturday at Fuller Lodge. The purpose of the convention was to elect new County Central Committee members, County Officers and delegates to the Republican State Central Committee.

New Mexico Republican Party Second Vice Chair Kelly Zunie traveled to Los Alamos Saturday morning to speak at the convention. She brought greetings from recently elected State Party Chair Steve Pearce and First Vice Chair Rick Lopez.

During her motivating talk Zunie encouraged Party members to unite on the basis of values.

“We need to be respectfully united,” she said.

Zunie also acknowledged former Los Alamos County Sheriff Marco Lucero and welcomed him as a new member of the Republican Party.

Lucero told the Los Alamos Daily Post Saturday morning that he officially changed his party affiliation last Wednesday from Democrat to Republican.

“I changed my Party affiliation based on Republican values that include God and country, life, and the Constitution of the United States,” Lucero said.

During the ward caucusing, Lucero and the other members broke into five wards to elect ward delegates and chairs.

Party members also elected new officers Saturday including Chair Bill McKerley, First Vice Chair James Whitehead, Second Vice Chair Paul Jaramillo and Treasurer Jane Gordon. The position of secretary is open.

Convention Chair Robert Gibson wrapped up the convention thanking the members and saying, “This is American grassroots democracy at work and I appreciate all of you participating”.
