Los Alamos School Board Selects 100% Remote Learning

LAPS News:

The LAPS School Board voted Tuesday night to open schools with 100 percent remote learning for all students.

Any change to the hybrid model will include a 4-week lead time and be based upon meeting criteria developed by LAPS staff and approved by the School Board, subject to PED requirements and Health Orders.

“Even though this was a very challenging decision, the safety and well-being of our students and staff take priority,” Board President Ellen Ben-Naim said. “By implementing a fully remote model for all students, we are ensuring that our students receive quality learning while preventing the potential spread of COVID-19.”

School begins Thursday, Aug. 13 for all students registered with LAPS. Teachers will report Aug. 5.

The School Board had considered a hybrid model, which would limit the number of students present in the building at any given time, but members agreed that it is important to make a decision that is the safest for staff and students and enables teachers to have time to prepare.

Teachers and staff will have opportunities to develop their remote learning skills through professional development and access to tools and resources to enhance online learning.

“We extend thanks and appreciation to the Safe-Start Task Force which is highly representative of our diverse community,” Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus said. “They have diligently taken into account all considerations on this topic.”

LAPS has solicited feedback from staff, parents, students and community members on the safe start of school, which has been considered in making this decision.

“We are confident that high quality teaching and learning will still occur, but we need to work together to make it possible,” Steinhaus said.

LAPS staff will begin planning this morning for the 100 percent remote learning. More information will be sent to parents to help with preparing students for the start of school.
