Los Alamos Police Hold DEA Drug Take Back Day Saturday

LAPD News:

The Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) is conducting its biannual DEA Drug Take Back Day 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 in the north parking lot (off Central Avenue) of the police station.

Due to COVID-19, additional precautions have been put in place to ensure the safety of everyone participating in the event.

LAPD asks the community to follow these guidelines:

  • Use the entry into the parking lot from Central Avenue;
  • Traffic cones will be in place to guide drivers and officers will assist drivers to drive by a drop off box;
  • People are encouraged to remain in their vehicles as no one will be allowed to park and walk up to the drop off box;
  • Officers will be wearing appropriate PPE for this event, and require those who arrive to wear a mask.
  • Anyone arriving to this event and are not in a vehicle; and
  • Safe Arrangements will be made on site for anyone arriving on foot to drop off their medications.

As a reminder, items that are not allowed to be dropped off include:

  • Needles/ sharps;
  • liquids or creams; and
  • aerosol/ compressed medications.

This drug diversion program is part of a national initiative by the DEA. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means for disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

This program has been highly successful for the Los Alamos Police Department and officers are excited to bring it back.
