LIBRARY News:

The 2013 Los Alamos Photographers’ Show (LAPS) opens Monday, March 4. LAPS is an annual event sponsored by the Los Alamos Photography Club and exhibited in the Mesa Public Library Gallery.

The show will open with a reception at 5:30 p.m. March 4 in the library’s Upstairs Rotunda. The public is invited to meet the photographers and enjoy refreshments and “finger-food” provided by the participants and exhibit sponsors. The photographs will remain on exhibit through March 29.

Approximately 120 pieces can be hung for display. The suggested number of entries for non-club member participants is three or less. For details on how to enter the show, visit http://dougsview.com/lapc

“The show presents the works of local photographers at many levels of development, from beginner to professional, said Doug Coombs of the Los Alamos Photo Club.

“Photographs on display typically include new digital techniques, black and white, abstracts, action, travel, and photos with special personality. The show’s quality and appeal improves each year. At the same time, the show remains quite open, and the list of participating photographers changes quite a bit from year to year. There is no entry fee, and no judging of entries, making it an ideal occasion for new or part-time photographers to display their work,” Coombs said. “Last year, LAPS ’12 presented about 120 pictures representing the work of dozens of Los Alamos photographers. Many of the photographs are available for purchase by contacting the photographer directly.”

LAPS ’13 is the 18 annual show, designed to promote the appreciation of photography in Los Alamos County, and to encourage Los Alamos photographers of all skill levels. For LAPS’s first several years, the leadership of Bob Brewer, TK Thompson and Jim Gautier forged the show into an important community event.

Since 2004, the show has been sponsored by the Los Alamos Photography Club (LAPC) and is theclub’s largest effort of the year. For the last several years, Doug Coombs has coordinated the show with the efforts of many other volunteers.

The public is also invited to an exhibit walk through at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19 in the Gallery to discuss the artistic and technical aspects of the photos on display. The “walk-about” provides valuable feedback to the photographers as well as insights into the ideas and circumstances that led to the photographs.

The Photo Club meets 7-9 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month in the upstairs meeting room of Fuller Lodge Art Center. Meetings offer photo-sharing on optional themes by attendees.

Club activities include occasional projects and field trips. For more information, contact Doug Coombs at dfcoombs@comcast.net or visit the LAPC website at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/la-photoclub/

The exhibit will be open during regular library hours. Contact Mesa Public Library administration at 662-8240 or visit the library website, www.losalamosnm.us/library for more information. The public is also invited to visit the new library Facebook page.
