Clark/ladailypost.comExcitement rippled through Los Alamos Medical Center Tuesday as a brand new, state of the art, Optima 660 64 slice CT scanner was unveiled.
Physicians, board members, department directors and staff gathered for a special ribbon cutting ceremony on the first floor of the medical center at 3917 West Road to dedicate the new machine.
“This scanner minimizes dose while delivering diagnostic image quality and it serves a broad range of applications including cardiac, angiography, brain, chest, abdomen, orthopedic and more,” said Fred Walker, LAMC’s director of Diagnostic Imaging.
The installation of the new CT scanner marks the fifth piece of state of the art diagnostic imaging equipment acquired recently by LAMC, he said. Last year the hospital installed a 9900 Elite, which provides 100 times more image computing power than previous OEC C-arms. Also purchased in 2015 is a Precision 500D Radiographic and Fluoroscopic system. This cutting edge equipment fulfills a variety of R&F roles. The hospital also purchased two LogiQ E9 Ultrasound machines that deliver excellent image quality on a wide variety of body types.
“We’ve invested nearly $4 million to purchase this important equipment, which allows us the ability to provide the very best in diagnostic care for our patients,” LAMC CEO Feliciano Jiron said. “We’re so pleased to have all this available for the community.”
Along with obtaining state of the art equipment, Jiron and his staff have implemented a number of innovative improvements at the hospital over the last couple of years that haven’t gone unnoticed. Last summer, Jiron was tapped to represent small hospitals on the American Hospital Association Section for Small or Rural Hospitals Governing Council. The national advisory committee represents AHA constituents and counsels AHA on advocacy, policy and strategic planning issues. He explained that the appointment provides LAMC the opportunity to help with policy making and strategic planning.
Also last year, LAMC again earned the top spot as the highest-rated hospital in northern New Mexico as determined by a nationwide rating system introduced by the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
