Los Alamos MainStreet News:

The 11th annual Los Alamos ScienceFest attracted attendees from near and far throughout the 5-day festival that took place July 11-15. The July 14 Discovery Day event had the largest number of exhibitors in the event’s history.

Attendees came to share their love of science in the town Where Discoveries Are Made.

“Survey results show we had visitors from Los Alamos County, 13 surrounding cities, 12 states beyond New Mexico and three countries,” Los Alamos MainStreet Director Lauren McDaniel said. “We wish to thank the sponsors, partners, exhibitors, vendors and community for making the 2018 Los Alamos ScienceFest such a successful event!”

More than 70 exhibitors provided unique and interactive Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) related activities during the July 14 Discovery Day at Ashley Pond Park and on the lawn at Fuller Lodge.

Del Norte Credit Union sponsored a first-time ScienceFest planning event called IMPACT training, during which exhibitors learned new ways to communicate their science to the general public.

The Science of Fitness demonstrations at the Ashley Pond stage were another first-time ScienceFest/Discovery Day activity. A big thank you to those instructors for coordinating and demonstrating a wide variety of fitness opportunities.

ScienceFest attendees had a chance to win one of 20 raffle prizes, including a 128 GB iPad, Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit, Zoom Lens, Women of NASA Lego kit, and many gifts generously donated by the local chapter of the American Chemical Society, such as a photographic card deck of the periodic table of elements and chemistry books.

Raffle prize winners have been notified and can pick up their prizes at the Los Alamos Visitor’s Center at 109 Central Park Square.

Thank you to the many local businesses who offered science-themed gifts, food and libations throughout ScienceFest this year.

The J. Robert Oppenheimer “Oppie” Look-Alike winner, Xavier McTeigue, took home a selfie drone for not only looking and acting like Oppie, but for demonstrating something in common with the famous Lab Director.

Festival organizers would like to thank Signature Sponsor, New Mexico Magazine and the many other sponsors and partners – including the Los Alamos Hill Stompers who provided music during Discovery Day – exhibitors, vendors and the community for helping make the festival a success.

Mark your calendars for the 2019 Los Alamos ScienceFest, July 10-14, with Discovery Day planned for Saturday, July 13, 2019. Details will be posted at www.LosAlamosMainStreet.com, www.LosAlamosScienceFest.com or follow us on the Los Alamos MainStreet and Los Alamos ScienceFest Facebook pages.
