Los Alamos Library Announces 2023 Summer Reading Program: ‘Find Your voice!’

COUNTY News:

The annual, incentivized summer reading program accommodates library patrons of all ages and schedules of all kinds.

This year, the summer reading program launches Monday June 5 and runs through July 29.

The theme is “Find Your Voice”.  All activities for adult and youth patrons are recorded in Beanstack, an online reading platform designed to help readers keep track and stay motivated. Patrons can register and access the challenge on or after the launch date June 5.

The adult summer reading program invites participants to log in three different ways: books they have read or listened to, themed activities and participation in qualifying library programs. Participants earn badges and a chance to win one of five different prize packages. Along the way, patrons may also pick up smaller completion prizes. As a new incentive this year, patrons may collect a registration prize at either library location while supplies last.

Examples of badge earning activities include logging and reviewing books, hosting a book club or participating in a library-sponsored book discussion, creating a family tree or an aspirational vision board, or using free online library resources for arts and craft.

Youth patrons can also participate in the summer challenge on Beanstack. For patrons entering 7th grade through recent high school graduates, every book read and logged in Beanstack (up to 20 books) earns an enamel pin and two digital tickets to put in a prize drawing for a lava lamp, an art set, a temporary tattoo set, or a $50 Amazon gift card.

Readers in kindergarten through entering 6th grade earn beads for their reading chain by tracking reading time in 20-minute increments. To earn an extra prize, each reader may write and log short book reviews. Library staff will redeem time read for beads, activities done for silicone charms, and reviews completed for various small treats.

Patrons younger than kindergarten age may choose to participate in the bead tracking challenge or 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, a reading challenge that goes on year-round. Every 100 book milestone earned in 1KBK in June and July earns an extra incentive like a floatie toy or a cloth book.

Details about Beanstack reading challenges are on the library catalog. Middle and high school students should stop by the youth services desk or the White Rock Library desk starting June 5 to get a daily scratcher ticket to win snacks, stickers and more. All daily scratcher tickets go in a weekly drawing to win a $25 Amazon gift card. For any age, answer the Question of the Week at the youth or WRBL desks to get a little treat. Both libraries will also have a sticker picture to work on together. Summer programming for everyone kicks off with a performance from Clan Tynker at 6 pm June 5 at Ashley Pond. Before the performance 4 p.m. on, community educators will have tables to share summer information and activities.
