MUSIC News:

The Los Alamos Jazz Project completed its first ever Summer Jazz Camp June 21 with two big band performances at the pavilion in Ashley Pond Park.

The first set was performed by a group of elementary and middle school students, followed by a second set performed by high school students. Both groups opened for Max Pack and Manzanares, as a part of the Secret City Summer Concert Series.

With more than 60 students from Los Alamos, Albuquerque, Las Vegas and Santa Fe, the Los Alamos Jazz Project Summer Camp was a huge success. The week started off with a concert by Mariano Morales and Friends, where a few students had the opportunity to perform on stage with this ensemble.

Over the course of the week, instructors including Arnaldo Acosta, Jeremy Bleich, Brad Dubbs, Joey Farish, Ryan Finn, William Finn, Alexander Mancino, Robert Muller, Jesse Parker, Tom Rheam, Richard Snider and J.Q. Whitcomb worked with students individually and as groups instructing them in jazz history, theory, improvisation and combo and big band performance.

“The LAJP Summer Camp was a great opportunity for students and faculty alike to come together through the study and performance of jazz music,” LAJP Executive Director Ryan Finn said. The students involved learned so much in just one week, and their growth was astounding. LAJP is looking forward to hosting the Summer Jazz Camp again next year.”
