Los Alamos Infant is in ICU

Police report this morning that the 11-week-old infant whose father admitted injuring him on Wednesday when he wouldn’t stop crying, is in the Intensive Care Unit at UNM Children’s Hospital.

Police also said this morning that the total extent of the infant’s injuries have not yet been determined.

The baby’s father is locked up in the Los Alamos County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond issued by Los Alamos Magistrate Court Judge Pat Casados.

Below is the story detailing the events involved in the arrest of the infant’s father:

Los Alamos Police have arrested Tyrell Abney, 19, of Los Alamos this evening and charged him with abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm.

Abney’s fiance Nicole Allison contacted police at 1:18 p.m. today to report that she was driving up to Los Alamos when she received a call from Abney saying that he had dropped their 11-week-old son at their Gold Street Apartment and that the baby wasn’t doing well.

Police arrived at the apartment and determined that Tyrell had taken the baby on foot across Trinity Drive to Los Alamos Medical Center.

Los Alamos Police Detectives reported seeing at least three areas that were injured on the head and face of the baby. Also, a doctor indicated that the injuries did not appear to be from a fall, according to the police report.

Tyrell voluntarily went with police to the police station and he ultimately admitted slapping the baby across the face and dropping him from about four feet off the ground and hitting his head on a partially open door.

The baby has injuries consistant with brain injury and both he and his mother were airlifted to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque.

Tyrell is being held in the Los Alamos County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
