LA HISTORICAL SOCIETY News:
A woman gazes across the room, transported in time.
She is wearing her evening gown, and he is in his old boy scout uniform! They are dressed in such attire to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Los Alamos Ranch School, reminiscent of the time when Brownmoor girls came from Santa Fe to dance with the young men at LARS. The bell atop Fuller Lodge rings out across the Historic District, rung by the winners of the night’s raffle. It signals the start of dinner, to be served Ranch School style.
She is seated by her gallant “scout.” Today’s Scouts from Troop 22 are there, also, to celebrate with the guests and to help the Los Alamos Historical Society with their yearly fundraising gala. Auctioneers Steve and Collin will soon call for bids in the Experience Auction. Her hopes are set on the Tour of the Dorothy McKibbin House in Santa Fe, while his eyes are no doubt on the Balloon Festival Gondola Club Passes.
After dinner, she wants to dance with her sweetie in Fuller Lodge to the music of the Bill Hearne Trio. She hopes he will twirl her on the dance floor as though they were young again.
Annual Fall Gala
The Los Alamos Historical Society is hosting its Annual Fall Gala Saturday, Sept. 16. The Los Alamos Ranch School theme for this year’s gala honors the 100th anniversary of the school’s founding in 1917.
The gala will again feature the popular Experience Auction, with many items in keeping with the theme—Rifle Shooting Lessons, an Adult Birthday Party at the Hans Bethe House on Bathtub Row (a former LARS cottage), the Tour of Ashley Pond’s First Ranch School in northeastern New Mexico, and a hike to local, hidden Ranch School sites.
Guests are encouraged to embrace the theme and wear western attire or scout uniforms. The Blue Window Bistro will enhance the theme with a special Ranch School menu offering brisket or trout.
The Historical Society encourages people to take advantage of the early bird rate by purchasing their tickets soon. Tickets are available on the Society’s website events page (losalamoshistory.org). Raffle tickets for a chance to ring the dinner bell in Fuller Lodge are available on the website as well.
The pre-event reception, to be held at the Hans Bethe House, will feature appetizers and beverages. Guests will be the first to hear of this year’s winner of the Los Alamos History Award.
A seated concert with dance floor will follow the dinner. The award-winning Bill Hearne Trio will entertain all. The trio was recently honored by the New Mexico Platinum Music Awards.
The Los Alamos Historical Society’s Annual Gala is the primary fundraising event to support initiatives such as updated museum exhibits, oral histories, publications, and outreach activities. The Historical Society is grateful to all of the volunteers and community businesses that make the gala possible.
