Los Alamos Historical Society’s annual membership campaign is underway. It’s a chance to become part of an organization dedicated to preserving the history of the town that changed the world.
Our history, however, doesn’t focus only on the events of World War II and the Manhattan Project. Obviously, the town owes it’s prolonged existence to that one monumental occurrence, but into the fabric of our community is woven so many more cultural, adventurous, and even ancient treasures. They are all available to anyone joining us in membership.
Those who become members enjoy a variety of perks ranging from unlimited admission to our museum for one year to a 10 percent discount in the Museum Shop on site or online to advance notice of special Museum events, among others.
More important, you will become a part of history – because it is still being made here. Membership offers the opportunity to explore in depth the Pajarito Mesa culture from the time of the Anasazi through the period of Hispanic homesteaders to the days of Los Alamos Ranch School and on to World War II and the Cold War. Even now, history is in the making as Los Alamos National Laboratory is involved in COVID-19 research, along with maintaining national security in these tense times. To be a member of LAHS is to support the documentation and preservation of all that history, while living it as well.
Memberships support the services Los Alamos Historical Society provides to our region – educational programs for schools, archival preservation, community lectures, walking tours, and so much more. Several membership categories offer a range of prices, giving those interested some cost options.
We at the Society look forward to welcoming new and renewing members as we go forward into an exciting future. We partner with other community organizations like PEEC and the National Park Service, as well as participating in the interpretive process for Fuller Lodge and likely working with the County on opening and interpreting the recently acquired WAC dorm – formerly the Christian Science building.
Assisting with and maintaining the historic properties on Bathtub Row – the Hans Bethe and Oppenheimer houses and the History Museum exhibits in the Guest Cottage – also are a top priority.
