HISTORICAL SOCIETY News:

This summer the Los Alamos Historical Society and Museum is thrilled to offer a number of community programs of interest to adults, children, teens and families, including:

  • Fourth Fridays;
  • History Adventures;
  • and ScienceFest.

On the fourth Friday of every month, special programs take place at the Los Alamos Historical Society, Fuller Lodge Art Center, Bradbury Science Museum, Mesa Public Library and Los Alamos Nature Center. These organizations are open late on those days and will hold activities for the public to participate in.

So far, activities by the Historical Society and Museum have included an Instagram scavenger hunt and a “Spy Academy” with a paper Enigma machine and a code-breaking challenge, both organized with the Fuller Lodge Art Center. Fourth Fridays are sponsored by the Los Alamos Creative District.

History Adventures is a program put on by the Los Alamos Historical Society for children in grades K-3. It takes place at 10-11 a.m. every Tuesday through July 21. History Adventures offers educational and hands-on activities for kids and meets on the lawn of Fuller Lodge. It is free with no registration required.

The Los Alamos Historical Society and Museum is excited to be part of the Los Alamos ScienceFest. The 70th anniversary of the Trinity test will be observed 4:30-6:30 a.m., July 16. The test occurred at 5:29:45 a.m. July 16, 1945. The public is welcome into the Bethe House at 1350 Bathtub Row where the flash of the test was witnessed by two people looking out the living room window.

Join Historical Society members for early morning discussions, video interviews with eyewitnesses, live tweeting historic accounts of the event, and coffee and refreshments. Note: Park in the Senior Center North Lot and follow the sidewalk until crossing Bathtub Row to reach the Bethe House.

As part of ScienceFest, the Historical Museum will offer hour-long guided walking tours of the Historic District at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., July 16, 17 and 18. The Atomic Film Festival is July 17, in which the Historical Society will screen movies all day in Fuller Lodge.
