The former location of the Balagna Winery at 223 Rio Bravo in Pajarito is for sale.

During its operation, locals and wine lovers from all over the region visited to enjoy the wine and spectacular views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Rio Grande river.

Owners John and Jean Balagna both came to Los Alamos during the WWII Manhattan Project. John planted one of the first vinifera vineyards in Northern New Mexico on the front of the three-acre property.

In the early 1980’s, the Balagnas built a wine tasting room, which is partially constructed using large stones hauled out of the Jemez Mountains. This casita hosted many lively events.

John’s claim to fame came from his La Bomba Grande wine. For Los Alamos National Laboratory’s 50th anniversary celebration in 1993, John created a red blend that he gave to all the attendees at the celebration. This award-winning wine was featured in Newsweek Magazine and numerous wine connoisseur publications.

This special property is on 3.6 acres that provide a primary residence, casita, garage and two barns. The primary home at 2,390-square-feet is adobe construction and boasts Spanish style throughout. Large wrought iron and blue glass light fixtures, kiva fireplaces, red brick floors and tall viga ceilings make this home beautifully unique.

The former wine tasting room is now a lovely guest casita. At 940 square feet, it features a flagstone patio, living room, kitchen, bathroom, two kiva fireplaces and wrap around deck. The views from this deck can only be described as a slice of heaven.

This property can be viewed by appointment only. Contact Listing Brokers Suzette Fox at 505.412.9073 or Paula M. Glover at 505.412.3400 for information or a showing appointment.
