Los Alamos Hilltoppers Prevail Over Santa Fe Demons

Fresh off road wins at class 4A Pojoaque and class 5A Belen, Saturday night the Topper boys’ basketball team returned to Griffith Gymnasium to face the class 6A Santa Fe Demons. The Demons came to town sporting a 9 win – 5 loss record.

Coach Mike Kluk’s Toppers had a 17-14 lead after one quarter. They increased their lead in the 2nd period outscoring the Demons 12 to 6. However, the Demons came back in the 3rd quarter outscoring the Toppers 15 to 8. They also outscored the Toppers in the 4th quarter. With the score tied at 45 all the Toppers had the last possession with seconds remaining, but the Toppers desperation shot was off, and the game ended tied at 45 all after 4 quarters.

Both teams had the ball with opportunities to take the lead in overtime. Finally, the Toppers junior guard, Antonio Trujillo, made a three-point shot and the Toppers kept the lead until the final whistle.  Final score was 55-53.

Junior Michael Naranjo led the Toppers in scoring in the first half with 13 points; he ended the game with 14 points. The fearsome senior, Isaac Fason, played a steady game for the Toppers also finishing with 14 points. The Demons had no match for the burly Fason or the 6’8” senior, Cade Gasway, who blocked 5 Demon shots. Naranjo led the Toppers in rebounding with 9; Gasway had 8 rebounds. The Demons balanced scoring was led by senior David Marquez with 12 points.

Next the Topper boys go on the road again to face Taos Jan. 10. The Topper girls will host the Taos girls Jan. 10.
