…West determined to make an impact
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Los Alamos High School senior Andrew West was elected to the Key Club International Board during a July special meeting held in lieu of the 2020 Key Club International Convention.
This year’s convention, planned for San Francisco, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Key Club International, a Kiwanis International student leadership program, is a growing organization with thousands of clubs in more than 38 countries. Key Club enables high school students to lead and stand for what’s right through service and volunteerism. In partnership with local Kiwanis clubs, Key Club members make positive impacts by serving others in their schools and communities.
A six-year member of Kiwanis International student programs, West has served in multiple Key Club office positions.
“I have a lot of past experience in Key Club, so I definitely know of areas we can improve in,” West said. “I also have experience working at the club, district and international levels, which gives me a good idea of what each level needs from international.”
During his term as lieutenant governor and Kiwanis family chair on the Southwest District board, West improved the district’s communication with Kiwanis clubs and the community. He created monthly articles for lieutenant governor newsletters encouraging Kiwanis club and Key Club collaboration, chartered new guides for every branch of the Kiwanis family, began an advisor pen pal mentorship program and introduced a new award at the Key Club District convention to showcase Kiwanis family projects.
As international trustee, West’s main priority is to support his three districts during the COVID-19 pandemic. He intends to have the international board work closely with general members, improve Key Club’s relationship with Kiwanis clubs, amend bylaws and help create the 2021-2025 strategic plan.
Outside of Key Club, West swims at the varsity and club level and is a ski patroller. He also is a member of National Honor Society and National Math Society.
West is enrolled in MOSTEC, a six-month online science and engineering program for rising high school seniors from across the country. He also attends Stanford Online High School. After graduation, West intends to study a combination of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and social justice.
In his free time, West enjoys skiing, reading, listening to music and spending time with friends.
