The Los Alamos High School golf program hosted its 2016 fall tournaments Sept. 19-20.
High school golf teams from around the state participated in the events. There were 94 golfers for the Sept. 19 tournament and 46 golfers for the Sept. 20. The girl’s team finished in second place behind 6A power house Cleveland High. Cleveland finished with a team score of 341 while Los Alamos finished with a 404 team score.
The Taos Tigers won the team competition Sept. 20, but the Los Alamos team had three individuals place for the individual awards. Senior Liz Lockhart placed third with a 97. Freshman Leah Mountain came in second with a score of 81, besting her score from the Sept. 19 tournament by 7 strokes.
Eigth grader Jessica Osden came in first with an outstanding 79, dropping her score by 9 strokes from the previous tournament. Both Osden and Mountain picked up their final two individual legs for state tournament qualification putting them in the state tournament as individual golfers. Head Coach Tim Hammock likes what he is seeing from his young team.
“I am very proud of the way the girls improved from Monday’s tournament to Tuesday’s tournament,” he said. “They took it upon themselves to focus more in this one and it really showed in their scores.”
Hammock still has hopes of qualifying the team for state.
“We’ve had a couple of opportunities to get some legs under us but have come up just a little short,” Hammock said. “The girls are practicing hard now so we can go into these next few fall tournaments and see if we can’t get over the hump and get some team legs in.”
Up next for the Toppers is the Albuquerque Fall Invitational #2 Sept. 29 at the Los Altos Golf Course.
