The Los Alamos High School (LAHS) Girls Track & Field team won their third State Championship in a row at UNM Friday and Saturday, May 12-13, a feat duplicated by the Hilltopper Boys as well (see separate article for their results).

The Hilltopper Girls dominated the Class 4A competition, accumulating 176.5 points, more than the next five teams put together, and more than a third of all the points available in all events. They won 15 of the 17 events they competed in, accumulating three new LAHS School Records and four new State Championship records.
Sophomore Jaiya Daniels was Class 4A high point athlete, personally accounting for 26 points of the ‘Topper total.  She won the 100, 200 (in an LAHS and State 4A record 24.64 seconds), triple jump (in an LAHS record 39’ 1/4”) and was part of the winning (and state record) 4×100 (with Angelina Passalaqua, Meredith Brown, and Allie Holland) and 4×200 relays (with Holland, Brown, and Syana Sanchez).
In a demonstration of the strength of the Hilltopper squad, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th highest point athletes were junior Angelina Passalaqua, senior Emma Montoya, and sophomore Colette Bibeault. Passalaqua accumulated 23 points by winning both hurdle events (100 m and 300 m), finishing 3rd in the long jump, and being part of the winning 4×100 and 4×400 relays. Montoya scored 18 points by winning both the 1600 and 3200 and placing 3rd in the 800. Bibeault scored 16 points by winning both the pole vault and high jump and leading off the winning 4×400 relay (with Passalaqua, Brown, and Anna Wetteland).

Other notable performances by ‘Topper Girls include junior Anna Wetteland’s 56.85 second win in the 400 m, breaking the 28-year-old LAHS school record in that event.  Wetteland also anchored the winning 4×800 relay, which with teammates Hailey McDowell, Zorah Fullop, and Rebecca Beaux, posted the #2 all-time LAHS performance of 9:46.4. Senior McDowell ran a come-from-way-behind 800 m anchor leg of the 1600 sprint medley relay to win that event with teammates Kayli Lincoln, Carley Holland, and Jenna Montoya. Senior Nyla Lee won the long jump with a leap of 18’ 3/4”, followed by 2nd place Allie Holland’s 17’ 11-1/2” jump. Sophomore Dani Trellue placed 2nd in both the 100 m hurdles and pole vault, and placed 4th in the triple jump.

Junior Angelina Passalaqua won both hurdle events (100 m and 300 m), was part of the winning 4×100 m and 4×400 m relays and placed 3rd in the long Jump. She was the runner-up high point athlete for the 4A Girls. Photo by Blake Wood
