A team from Los Alamos High School swept the competition at the regional Science Bowl tournament and will be heading to Washington, D.C. this month to compete in the National Science Bowl for a chance at the national title.
The A team of Charles Cai, Mary Couture, Isaac Gao, Linnhtet Htoon and Minhtet Htoon went undefeated in the competition, while the B team of Jasper Carpenter, Willow Chartrand, Adeline Feng, Quinton Geller and Ming Lo won five out of seven total rounds.
“They showed off incredible knowledge and even better sportsmanship,” fourth-year coach Ali Renner said. “I could not be prouder of them!”
Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition sponsored by the U.S Department of Energy that tests middle and high school students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Te ams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.
After winning the regional competition, the A team will be traveling to Washington, D.C., for the National Science Bowl where they will compete against thousands of other students for the chance to win a trip for their team and money for their school.
Prior to the regional tournament, the Science Bowlers challenged the LAHS science teachers to a mock competition, where the A team won by a score of 158-54.
The competition was created in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. According to the Department of Energy’s website, the National Science Bowl is one of the nation’s largest science competitions.
