The public is invited to the 46th edition of the Los Alamos Geological Society Earth Treasure Show 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 at the Masonic Temple, corner of 15th and Canyon in Los Alamos. Admission is free.
We will have lots of fun activities for young and old alike. We will have door prizes every 30 minutes, silent auctions of minerals, fossils, and earth science related items throughout the day, and ten dealers with minerals, fossils, gems, jewelry, books, and other neat items for yourself or for Christmas presents for that special someone.
For the kids, we will have a craft table with fossil finding activities for older children and other activities for younger children. There will be special drawings where children may win mineral sample kits and the Wheel of Fortune where children can spin the wheel and win a cool prize! We have a new batch of geodes and sawing is available.
We will have educational displays of rocks, fossils and New Mexico mining history. Dr. Virgil Lueth of the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral resources will be identifying minerals Sunday afternoon. Alan Schmiedicke will be demonstrating fossil preparation.
When you get hungry, the ladies of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary will have a snack bar running all day both days. The breakfast burritos are a big hit on Saturday mornings.
The Los Alamos Geological Society was formed in 1966 to promote interest in geology and the Earth Sciences in the New Mexico region. Family membership dues are $20 per calendar year, which can be paid for at the show. LAGS has monthly meetings and fields trips from March through October.
Proceeds from the Earth Treasure Show go to supporting scholarships for students to attend the Fall Field Conference (sponsored by the New Mexico Geological Society). Come out, join us, and find out why so many people come to the Earth Treasure Show year after year!
