Los Alamos Fire Department Fire Marshal Wendy Servey announced today that she is lifting all Level II Fire Restrictions for Los Alamos County, effective immediately.

Servey said the decision was made in partnership with LAFD’s Wildland Division after reviewing recent rainfall events, fuel moisture, fire activity levels and current or predicted weather patterns.

“We are fortunate that Los Alamos has enjoyed some significant storms in the past week, bringing much-needed rainfall to our area,” Servey said.

Monsoonal flow has begun bringing more moisture into Northern New Mexico, decreasing the threat of fires.

Servey praised the community for their assistance in safely navigating another active fire season without incident.

“I would like to thank our citizens for their cooperation over the last two months as we implemented Baseline Fire Restrictions in June and then moved into Level II fire restrictions in July, especially with respect to campfires within our open spaces in the surrounding forest and responsible use of fireworks,” Servey said, adding that the community’s cooperation meant that Los Alamos County was able to avoid another potentially dangerous and dry fire season.

With the lifting of the Level II restrictions today, residents can now enjoy charcoal or barbecue fires previously banned at County parks or at developed campsites, although Servey emphasized a need for continued vigilance in properly attending to and dousing campfires to prevent wildfires.

Santa Fe National Forest rescinded its Stage 2 restrictions Tuesday.
