The Los Alamos Derby Dames hosted a triple-header Saturday, May 5 with games against the junior Las Vegas Extraterrestrials, the Santas out of Crossroad City Derby in Las Cruces, and a mash-up juniors match between Los Alamos, Las Vegas and the Duke City Marionettes of Albuquerque.

The Cherry Bombs of Los Alamos won the first juniors game 215-162, and Los Alamos Derby Dames also won the match against Cruces 254-92.

The mashup was played in black and white as Dark Side versus Jedi, with the Dark Side winning 261-183. The Cherry Bombs were challenged by the Las Vegas team, who outsized the Bombs and whose roster also included three boys to the Bombs’ all female team. The Cherry Bombs maintained a narrow lead through most of the first half, which opened up in the second after halftime strategy adjustments to cope with the ETs’ physicality.

Los Alamos managed to control the speed of the pack, minimize their own penalties, and played a tight strategic game that ultimately earned them the victory. Wolverina (Qiu Hawkins) was a high-flying jammer, repeatedly bypassing all opposing blockers by leaping over the track apex.

The women of Los Alamos played against the B team Santas of Crossroads City, whose headliner Sucias are currently ranked 68 internationally. The Santas were the favorites coming into the match but were met with strong defensive play and struggled to break their jammers out of the pack.

Los Alamos jammers Latzah Balls (Rachel Adler), Knotty Dotty (Dorothy Kaeck), Acute Pain (Mary Alice Hawkins), and Hanarchy (Hannah Behar) were able to control the pace of the game by consistently securing lead jammer status, denying scoring opportunities to Cruces and keeping the Los Alamos bench fresh.

The mashup allowed the junior skaters to get more playing time and shake out of their usual teams, and also to allow new skaters not quite ready for competitive play to get game time in a low-stakes just-for-fun situation.
