Los Alamos Creative District Expands To Include Los Alamos Nature Center And Reel Deal Theater

Creative District News:

The Los Alamos Creative District announced today that the New Mexico Arts Commission recently approved its request to expand the district to include the Los Alamos Nature Center and Reel Deal Theater.

Both sites, which will now be considered Arts & Cultural Institutions of the Los Alamos Creative District, are within walking distance of the district and add significant cultural contributions to the area.

“I am delighted with the expansion of the Creative District and for future planning and projects for both Reel Deal Theater and the Nature Center,” said Jennifer Loveless, Los Alamos Creative District curator and events manager. “The district represents an area where cultural, social, and economic activity takes place. It only makes sense to include these two establishments, where creative community activities happen on a daily basis.”

The Arts & Cultural Districts program creates positive economic impact on districts that identify arts, history, artists, arts entrepreneurs, creative industries, and cultural facilities as key assets of their community revitalization efforts.

“The Arts & Cultural Districts Program helps our network communities identify strategies to improve the creative economy in our downtowns,” Economic Development Secretary Matthew Geisel said. “The MainStreet Program working in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs supports creative industries, artists, and cultural facilities to ensure vibrant New Mexico communities.”

State-Authorized Arts & Cultural Districts receive incentives such as assistance with developing cultural plans and enhanced historic tax credits for the rehabilitation of historic structures within the district. New Mexico currently boasts a network of 12 Arts & Cultural Districts; Los Alamos has the only “Creative” Arts & Cultural District in the state. Los Alamos is designated as “creative” to highlight arts, culture, and science in the downtown. The Arts & Cultural Districts Program is a joint effort of several state agencies and private entities including the Economic Development Department, New Mexico MainStreet, Department of Cultural Affairs divisions: New Mexico Arts and Historic Preservation, and the McCune Charitable Foundation.

The Los Alamos Creative District’s mission is to advance the community’s unique creative identity and generate increased economic prosperity for a better quality of life. Los Alamos creativity is a rare asset arising from its rich past and ongoing vitality in the art, science, technology, history, the natural environment and outdoor recreation. It provides a focal point for amplifying this creativity.

“We are thrilled that the Los Alamos Nature Center has been designated as part of the Creative District, which does so much to bring fun, entertaining programming to Los Alamos,” Nature Center Executive Director Katie Bruell said. “This was a goal in our 2016 strategic plan, and we’re grateful to the MainStreet and Creative District staff who have helped us make the goal a reality.”
