LAPS News:

The annual Los Alamos County Science Fair will take place Saturday, Jan. 26 in the Los Alamos High School Commons Area and between 1-3 p.m., the public is invited to view the projects.

Los Alamos Public Schools and home school students and teachers in grades K-12 will display projects in 4-5th grade individual elementary, K-6 grade elementary class, 6-8 grade junior division and 9-12 grade senior division.

The elementary projects are divided into three categories: Physical, Earth and Life Sciences. The students in junior and senior divisions will compete for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and Honorable Mention in 17 categories.

This will give them an opportunity to participate in the Northeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair March 2 in Las Vegas, N.M.

All 6-12 grade students are present during judging. The junior and senior division students will receive feedback from the judges, which will assess the student’s scientific approach, skills, creativity, clarity, and thoroughness. Therefore, the participation in the County Science Fair is valuable experience for student learning.

Participation at the Science Fair helps the students to achieve State Standard I for every student in every grade level. This standard requires students to understand the processes of scientific investigations and use inquiry and scientific ways of observing, experimenting, predicting, and validating to think critically.

This year there are more than 300 student projects registered for the Science Fair. Local fair sponsors, who provide special awards, make the Los Alamos County Science Fair a memorable event.

More than $10,000 in awards and donations have been received this year from the Los Alamos community. The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee and CB FOX are this year’s t-shirt sponsors. The generosity of the Oppenheimer Committee and CB FOX help to ensure that all 319 participating students receive a science fair t-shirt.

Los Alamos National Security, LLC and Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos Kiwanis and the Los Alamos Elks are corporate sponsors for the 2013 fair. There are more than 30 organizational and individual donors this year and 100 fair judges.
