A few clouds and little wind couldn’t strike out the enthusiasm of the Opening Day Ceremonies for the Los Alamos County Little League as hundreds of players, coaches and families gathered this morning at the North Mesa Ball Fields. All 34 teams were introduced to the crowd before taking a seat on the edge of the outfield for the chance to have their names “drawn out of a hat” to win baseball and softball gear and brand new bicycles. In total, 19 new boys and girls bikes were given away to players across all divisions.

“It’s the largest organized sports association we have in Los Alamos and we’re trying to do what we can to promote it,” said Los Alamos County Councilor and League President, but most importantly Coach to the Los Alamos Minors A Rangers James Chrobocinski. “Little league allows the kids to get out there, get healthy, learn teamwork and sportsmanship and hopefully build a strong base to move up to middle school and high school sports”

With around 500 boys and girls from Los Alamos and White Rock registered with the Los Alamos Little League, the league is always looking for more help.

“The league’s completely run by volunteers and that’s always a challenge because we have 500 kids who play. Our biggest challenge is finding enough umpires, it’s always a daunting task, but we’ve been using a lot of middle and high school kids who will come out and ump for us,” add Chrobocinski.

In a Los Alamos tradition, seniors from the Los Alamos High School baseball and softball teams threw out the ceremonial first pitch this morning to get the season started.

With the road to Williamsport, PA underway, opportunities are always available to get involved. Visit www.lalittleleague.org for more information.
