The next Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce Business Breakfast will take place 7:30-9 a.m. Thursday, March 15 at UNM-LA. Tamara Baer, Planning Manager in the Community Development Department in Los Alamos County, will present the County’s new proposed Sign Code, with a focus on how it may affect the business community.
Revisions to the County Sign Code were prompted by a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision clarifying the requirement for content neutrality in the regulation of speech, including signage. The new sign code complies with this requirement, while still regulating the size, material, time, place, and manner of display of signage. The main structural difference, as proposed, is that signs will now be separated into Permanent and Temporary signs. Regulation will continue to be based on “Sign Areas” as currently exist.
Overall, the revisions simplify the organization and the specifics of sign regulation, as well as simplifying the permitting process. Removal of many of the previously regulated sign categories, which were content specific, deletion of outdated graphics, and removal of much of the former content that legally may not be regulated, has resulted in a significantly shorter and simpler sign code.

The Chamber of Commerce is helping to celebrate the opening of Samantha D’Anna Photography. Please join in to welcome D’Anna 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 at 2101 Trinity Dr., Suite S. Light refreshments will be served.
D’Anna has been a professional photographer for six years, specializing in natural light portrait photography and weddings. She has taken photographs for many couples, including engagement, save the date and weddings; maternity and senior portraits; family and head shots. D’Anna will also photograph pets. She also really enjoys the art of Boudoir photography. D’Anna loves the outdoors and is always willing to do location photo shoots. Her goal is to make her clients comfortable and ensure they have fun. She wants everyone to walk away from a photo session confident and happy with lasting memories. D’Anna graduated from Los Alamos High School in 2010 the studied photography while attending UNM.
As part of the celebration there will be a drawing for 1- 30 minute photo session for new clients. In addition, a 20 percent discount is being offered on photo sessions booked during the open house (excludes weddings and Boudoir marathons).

Cruiser’s Custom Embroidery celebrated opening its new location Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting attended by County Counselors and fellow business owners. Cruiser’s Custom Embroidery has been in business for more than 10 years, and in August, owner Mike Luna decided he needed more space to handle the large embroidery orders he’s been delivering to local organizations, clubs and teams.
“I specialize in large orders,” Luna said. “I just finished more than 350 pieces for the Los Alamos Middle School and High School bands! For the past 10 or so years, I’ve been working out of a spare room and needed more space to handle my orders. Being a business owner and paying rent is a big risk, but I grew up in a small business family, so I know what it takes and how to ride the waves.” Luna continued.

Filming for a commerical to promote Small Business Saturday began Thursday. Courtesy PhotoProduction is underway on a local commercial promoting the businesses participating in Small Business Saturday in Los Alamos. Filming started Thursday, Sept. 21, at several of the retailers who have already signed up to be involved in the popular activity which encourages consumers to shop local on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Jean Gindreau of PAC-8 and Kate O’Donnell of Real Deal Advertising started early Thursday with their camera at Rose Chocolatier, filming actresses, locals and shop owner Marguerite McClay. Filming was scheduled to take place during the day at Pet Pangaea, Boomerang, Bennett’s Fine Jewelry, and CB Fox. Metzger’s Do-it- Best Hardware is among the businesses on the production schedule for next week.
The commercial will air at the Real Deal theater in late October and November when the holiday block buster movies are scheduled for release.

Committee needs businesses to sign up early this year because a scavenger hunt app game will include every single business that signs up. Work Is Underway For Small Business Saturday

It takes a lot of time and effort to plan for the holidays.
That’s why the Small Business Saturday Committee has already started working on the biggest holiday shopping day of the year – the Saturday after Thanksgiving – which is Nov. 25 this year. Businesses are invited to sign up to participate in the county-wide event that increases awareness of the variety of stores located in our community and encourages residents to shop local.
It costs nothing to register to participate. The benefits include being listed on the Small Business Saturday map, listed on the SBS website, mentioned in SBS social media posts, potentially being the focus of a SBS feature article, potentially being included as a challenge in the SBS Goosechase game, and receiving SBS swag to decorate your store for Small Business Saturday. Chamber membership is not required to participate; the Chamber of Commerce just assists in organizing the event.
A SBS tradition in Los Alamos is for the participating businesses to donate a portion of their proceeds from Small Business Saturday to the nonprofit of their choice. This sets Los Alamos apart from all other communities that observe American Express’ Small Business Saturday and gives it a unique nature that makes it more about community. Businesses select what percentage or flat dollar amount they want to donate, and they select the nonprofit – which can be local, statewide, national or international, animal or people focused. Anything goes, including choosing not to participate in the tradition.

2018 Healthcare Benefit Plans Topic of Chamber Breakfast

Sperling has more than 33 years of employee benefit experience. She received numerous awards for her distinguished service to her profession and to her community including the prestigious New Mexico Woman of Influence Award, Santa Fe Business Woman of the Year, Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year, highest-level lifetime achievement Leading Producer Roundtable Designation, and NMAHU’s “Anne Sperling Award.”

She draws on her experience working as a structural engineer in the construction industry and in product development for a solar PV racking manufacturer to design and specify the optimum solar installations for individual properties.
